Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
In a major blow to the Trinamool Congress ahead of the 2024 elections, the National Election Commission has stripped the party of its national party status. This decision is seen as a setback for the party, which has been one of the main opposition parties in India.
The decision to strip Trinamool of its national party status was taken after the party failed to win the requisite number of seats in the recent assembly elections held in four states and one union territory. As per the Election Commission's guidelines, a party needs to win at least 2% of the seats in the Lok Sabha from at least three different states in order to qualify for national party status.
Trinamool, which is the ruling party in the state of West Bengal, has expressed disappointment with the decision and has said that it will file a review petition with the National Election Commission. If the review petition is rejected, the party plans to challenge the decision in the Supreme Court.
The loss of national party status is likely to have an impact on Trinamool's funding, as national parties are eligible for certain benefits such as free airtime on state-owned television and radio channels, and subsidies for candidates in elections.
